Tumblr has announced that it is rolling out an update for its iOS app which features the ability to share Live Photos and enable 3D touch functionality.

The company's new update is currently only available for the Apple iPhone 6S and 6S Plus. This is the first time a major social network has incorporated the Live Photos feature. An additional updates was also being rolled out by the company to selected users last month which include live messaging feature.

This move by the company set as a positive indication for Apple's Live Photos feature since a major social network has embraced it. Some Apple Software also supports Live Photos feature including AirDrop, iMessage, and iCloud Photo Sharing.

For those people who do not own an iPhone 6S or 6S Plus, the Live Photos feature are animated images that capture movement and sound just before and after a photo is taken - precisely 1.5 seconds. The company does not refer to them as videos, and iPhone will not save these live photos as video format. Apple's Live Photos is very suitable for an audio-visual platform such as Tumblr. Currently, the blogging platform is home to all forms of memes, GIFs, and videos.

According to Digital Trends, Tumblr users can add Live Photos on their posts in the same way with other normal photo. Once the Live Photos are posted, the post will be carrying a special icon that appears in other users news feeds.

Live Photo posts can be view and heard on an iPhone 6s using the 3D Touch - deep pressing the display. Meanwhile, users of older iPhone models can also view the images by just tapping and holding the post. Unfortunately, Android users can not view the Live Photos and will only display as normal image posts.

On 2013, Yahoo purchased Tumblr for $1.1 billion. Currently, the social blogging network contains over 267 million blogs and an estimated 58.3 million user posts per day.
