Uber is no longer just a name of a taxi-hailing app in India after a mother, who gave birth inside one of the transport network's cars in South Delhi, named her child Uber.

For nine months, the woman identified as Babli and her family had been trying to find the best name for the expected new member of the family but that changed when Babli's labor day came.

Babli and two other female companions decided to hire an Uber car on their way to a government hospital after their repeated emergency calls for an ambulance were not answered.

"We were looking for an ambulance but several minutes have passed and we did not receive any response so we decided to try looking for cab," one of the women told a local reporter.

The Uber driver, identified as Shahnawaz, told the Times of India that he first urged the women to call an ambulance but was told that they already tried doing so.

He then decided to drive the three women towards Safdarjung Hospital in South Delhi but along the way, he noticed that the woman was already writhing in pain and her two female companions did not know what to do.

Shahnawaz stopped the car and aided the women, who turned the back seat of the Uber car into a labor room.

"I pulled out the towels from the seats and poured some drinking water into a bowl. The child was born within minutes and I was really happy to see that he was responding," he said.

The driver then rushed the woman to the hospital, put her on a stretcher and then dragged her towards the emergency room.

Shahnawaz said the doctors asked him if he was the woman's husband but when he told them the real story, the entire hospital staff lauded him for his heroic deed.

As a gesture of gratitude, the woman and her family urged Shahnawaz to pick the name of the newly born child.

Shahnawaz hesitated at first but the woman said the child needed a name for this Sunday's christening. After a deep thinking, the driver said he will name the baby Uber, to which the family has agreed.
