The 35-year-old Wambach knew that it was going to be her 255th and final appearance for USWNT as she looked like someone ready to hang up her cleats when she stepped onto the soccer field, as per USA Today.

With her teammates keen on giving her one final chance to extend his world record 184-goal haul for Team USA, it seems like the Americans forgot that they are actually playing against an opponent.

A beautiful cross from midfielder Heather O'Reilly three minutes before the hour mark of the match found Wambach near the Chinese goal, but the Rochester, New York native was not able to touch the ball as it rolled past goalie Zhao Lina and into the end line.

In the next play, China PR striker Wang Shuang scored the winning goal coming from an assist by teammate Wang Shanshan to give the visitors the upper hand.

Thirteen minutes later, Wambach already had enough and she was replaced by Christen Press, amidst a loud ovation from the crowd. The match momentarily stopped as she was greeted and hugged by teammates and the Chinese players as well.

Yahoo Sports noted that "it was the Americans' first loss to China in 26 games and their first loss to anybody in 24 games", still nobody seemed to mind.

Wambach became uncharacteristically emotional during the pre-game pageantry, proclaiming that she was "one of the greatest female athletes ever". It was unlike her as she was seen as someone gritty and focused about any game at hand.

The game did not end up as a win for USWNT, but it will truly be remembered as the final game of perhaps one of the greatest women's soccer players not only in the US but also in the world.
