Cleveland Browns head coach Mike Pettine has yet to pick the starting quarterback for the team, saying as potential starters Johnny Manziel and Brian Hoyer have not proven either of them deserve the role.

At a teleconference held on Tuesday, the coach was anticipated to announce whether the rookie Manziel, a Heisman Trophy winner, or Hoyer, the hometown hero back from knee surgery and inexperienced veteran, would start against Pittsburgh on Sept. 7.

Since the choice has not been made, it would be carried through the Browns' third preseason match on Saturday.

Pettine said the team's coaching staff would be meeting on Wednesday night and would possibly choose a starter quarterback.

"We're not in position to make it at this point in time," the coach said of an announcement numerous Browns fans have been eagerly awaiting for months. "We'll decide later if we're ready to name a starter. We could have one named, and I'm not ruling that out. That's something we're going to discuss. And if we do have to wait until after the next game, so be it.

"We're going to weigh everybody's opinion. I'm very clearly on record: I would like to make a decision, and that's still very much a possibility."

Pettine repeated that "all options are on the table," which could mean that he could choose Manziel or Hoyer or even wait until after the team hosts the St. Louis Rams in Cleveland's third match.

The coach's choice got even harder after the 23-24 match loss at Washington on Monday night where both candidates for the quarterback position performed poorly.

Hoyer started off the game and buckled under the pressure of competing against Manziel, which caused him to miss receivers who were wide-open, according to The Star.

Hoyer was able to complete two out of six passes for 16 yards, which are inadequate stats for a starting quarterback.

In the game, Manziel made an obscene gesture against the opposing team, which Pettine said was an "extremely disappointing" act. Manziel was only able to complete seven out of 16 passes he threw.

Pettine wants the discussion and quarterback competition to end. But the decision would have to wait until he is certain he has the right man for the job.
