Chinese qualifier and world No. 133 Shuai Zhang continues her shocking upsets on current world's higher ranked players - this time the casualty was world No. 33 France's Alize Cornet. Zhang won in straight sets 6-3, 6-3 to advance to the third round of the 2016 Australian Open on Thursday.

Zhang, who is fresh from sensationally outclassing the current world No. 2 Simona Halep of Romania in the opening round of the prestigious tennis tournament, backed up her Grand Slam breakthrough win with a convincing victory against the Frenchwoman ranked an unbelievable 100 places above her.

According to Xinhua, the qualifier was dogged in the victory, taking advantage of her break point opportunities while not allowing her French opponent to capitalize on her chances.

In Zhang's post-match press conference, the Chinese tennis player, who is also celebrating her 27th birthday, said she was still pinching herself after what turned out to be a "very nice birthday" in Melbourne.

"It's like a dream come true, but I'm looking forward to the next match," Zhang said.

"I don't want to stop right now, I want to keep going."

Her fellow countrywomen Zheng Saisai and Wang Qiang have already bowed out of the competition falling to their respective opponents. Zhang will be the only Chinese player to reach the third round of the Grand Slam tourney.

Zhang's victory over Cornet was just her second Grand Slam win in her 15 appearances. The Chinese tennis player will next face (world No. 51) Varvara Lepchenko of the United States in the third round on Saturday.

Zhang started tennis at the early age of six. She reached her career high singles ranking of world No. 30 on July 7, 2014. She plays right handed (double handed backhand) and likes to play on a hard surface.
