Two Asian firms have been fighting over the right to the title of being the manufacturer of the world's thinnest condom - and a Chinese company has won the case.

On Monday, a court ruling favored the rubber maker from Guangdong province over Japan's Okamoto. The Japanese company had been charged with illicit competition for claiming to make the thinnest prophylactic in the world and has been ordered to pay up a grand total of 1 yuan.

The Guinness World Records has awarded the China-based enterprise AONI the title for making the world's thinnest condom, with thickness at 0.036 mm, beating Okamoto's record of 0.038 in 2012.

Guangzhou Daming United Rubber Products highlighted that the Tokyo-based company, howwever, still displayed the words "World's thinnest" and "Guinness World Record" on its products in May 2014. This forced the company to file a lawsuit on September 2014 on grounds of false advertising, asking for a 1 yuan ($0.15) compensation for damages.

The court held that Okamoto was aware of the new world record and has ordered the company to stop printing the phrases on its products and pay the compensation.

However, considering the small amount charged, many have speculated that this is only a stunt by the Chinese condom maker to gain some publicity. In fact, some netizens revealed on Weibo that they have only known about the Chinese condom brand because of the lawsuit.

In defense, Guangzhou Daming United Rubber Products general manager Victor Chan said that the company filed the lawsuit to curb Okamoto's act of infringement and the amount was only minimal so that the proceeding will not focus on the issue of economic losses.
