Inmates in a Cascavel, Brazil jail killed four fellow prisoners, beheading two of them, during an uprising held to protest for better facilities, local authorities reported.

The other two who were killed were seen with ropes tied around their necks before they were pushed over the jail's roof while a minimum of five other inmates were reported to be wounded from the unrest.

Two jail guards were also taken hostage.

The inmates' protest began on Sunday morning after a group of jail workers were overwhelmed by inmates when they were delivering breakfast to the prisoners.

After that, the prison, which holds nearly a thousand inmates, was lit on fire by rioters.

Protesters seen on top of the enclosure's roof were photographed wearing white fabric covering their faces.

By the end of the day, protesting inmates had control over 60 percent of the prison as officials cut off water and electricity, and put additional security to make sure the protest do not spread further.

According to reports, more than 77 prisoners were relocated because of threats from the demonstrators.

Around 700 Cascavel City jail inmates started the unrest after reportedly imploring that the local government improve jail management as well as sanitary conditions behind bars.

"The prisoners say the food is bad, there are no lawyers to work their trials, no basic hygiene materials, few correctional officers," the prison workers union wrote in a statement, explaining that there was a lack of funding for proper jail management.

Records show that there are nearly 600,000 inmates sharing the already-crowded prisons in Brazil. Around 35 percent more space is needed in order to prevent overcrowding.

Meanwhile, state judicial spokesman Elson Faxina declared that negotiations are to resume on Monday.

Prison staff advocate Jairo Ferreira Filho stated that although negotiations may be prolonged, hopefully things can be "resolved verbally without using physical force."
