Bhutanese people are advocates for nature conservation. As stipulated by law, 60 percent of the country has to be under forest cover. A majority of the Bhutan population follow the religion of Buddhism. In Buddhist belief, trees are symbols of long life, health and compassion.

"We are now nurturing the plants as if we are nurturing the little prince," said Dasho Karma Raydi, a volunteer who also participated in the tree planting event.

Another volunteer explained why the number of sapling planted was 108,000 since the number 108 is quite significant in Buddhism. The number of trees planted is interpreted as the cleansing of 108 impurities of this world that prohibits human beings from achieving enlightenment.

This is not the first time that the people of Bhutan have carried out such an event. In 2015, Bhutan made it to the Guiness World Record by planting 50,000 trees in one hour. Bhutan's Ministry of Tourism orchestrated this event to officially inaugurate a 'Happiness Garden' in Thimpu, Bhutan's capital. The ministry officially requested tourists to plant their own 'happiness trees' in the garden, following an objective of a tree representing every country across the globe.
