Manchester United vice-captain Michael Carrick has turned down a huge £6 million per year offer from the Chinese Super League to remain with the Old Trafford residents for at least one more season, recent reports say.

The Sun indicated that the 34-year-old English midfielder was offered "to earn £6 million a year in Asia", but he is more inclined "to extend his deal at Manchester United for 12 months". Carrick's contract with the Red Devils is set to expire at the end of the season, but so far there had been no indications if the Premier League side is going to give him an extension.

Carrick signed a one-year contract extension with United in March of last year, increasing his stint with the club to 10 years as of the moment. He reportedly wants to stay for an 11th season, but it would be in the hands of the club's top officials if that would happen this summer.

The former West Ham United and Tottenham Hotspur standout has made a name for himself playing in the Old Trafford's midfield all through the years. He was acquired by United from the Spurs in July of 2006 and had become a mainstay and a symbol of steadiness even as today in Louis van Gaal's system.

His veteran presence and calmness is said to be highly useful in the Dutch coach's football philosophies on the pitch and while other experienced players, such as team captain Wayne Rooney, had been sidelined, Carrick remains in the starting eleven to provide the necessary composure the team needs to succeed.

It has been a struggle all season for the Red Devils, though, as they are now settled at the sixth spot in the league table and are in danger of missing the Champions League next season. They are a point behind current fourth-seed Manchester City, who is momentarily holding the fourth and final EPL Champions League berth.
