Another legendary game studio is closing its doors. The Sony-owned Evolution Studios, famous for developing some of the well-beloved racing franchises, recently announced its closure.

Evolution Studios is responsible for creating racing games like "WRC," "Driveclub," and "MotorStorm." The closure of the video game studio came just a year after it lost half of its staff due to redundancies.

Rumors claim that the closure stemmed from the delays and online connectivity issues which hampered the gaming experience of the studio's most recent title, "Driveclub," which was released exclusively for the PlayStation 4. Some claims that the diminishing interest in the racing genre also contributed to the eventual closure of Evolution Studios. Only two major racing franchises are expected to dominate the genre, Forza and Gran Turismo.

Both Sony and Evolution Studios had put too much hype on "Driveclub." The companies even portrayed that game as the next Gran Turismo and was originally billed as part of the PlayStation 4 launch lineup. However, numerous delays pushed the release date of the game by nearly a year and came out as a total mess when it hit the shelves, according to Engadget.

Sony's decision to close down Evolution Studios came after the Japan-based company made its regular review of all its developer arms.

In a statement acquired by Gaming Age, Sony said, "It is regrettable that this decision will lead to compulsory redundancies. We accept that this decision will mean that we risk losing high caliber staff but by focusing on other Studious that already have exciting new projects in development we believe we will be in a stronger position going forward and able to offer the best possible content of the highest quality for our consumers."

Sony added that it will try to reallocate the staff of Evolution Studios to other studios wherever possible.
