Utah Mom Arrested For Dumping Her Newborn In A Garbage Can

A 24-year-old Utah mom was arrested on Tuesday after she allegedly dumped her own newborn baby in a neighbor's garbage can, reports stated.

Alicia Marie Englert was taken into custody by Salt Lake City police on Tuesday for charges of attempted murder after she admitted to literally throwing away her two-day-old baby at a neighbor's garbage bin.

The infant, who was believed to have been born on Monday, is in 'extremely critical condition' as of Tuesday afternoon. Authorities believe the baby was not given any food or medical care since her birth.

She is currently being treated at Primary Children's Hospital where she was transferred after being rushed via ambulance to Pioneer Valley Hospital upon her discovery.

A female neighbor, who heard what she thought were meows from a kitten, found the newborn inside a trash can along 5300 South 5200 West. She then immediately called 911 after finding out the baby's condition.

According to the police, Englert has confessed to the crime though authorities are still probing as to why the 24-year-old mother threw her baby away.

An unnamed woman only identified as the suspect's relative claimed that had she known about her sister's condition, she could have prevented the terrible incident to happen.

Some of the neighbors who knew the child's mother were surprised when they heard about the news.

"All I can say is let's pray for this baby to survive," Adora Levitz, a neighbor who lives across the street, stated incredulously upon learning what Englert had done to an innocent child.

According to Salt Lake County Sheriff James Winder, their current priority is the child's full recovery. Representatives of the local law enforcement are continuously monitoring the baby's condition.

He also encouraged mothers who cannot take care of their children to consider Utah's Safe Haven laws, which allow mothers to leave their newborn babies at medical facilities in the state without being reprimanded.
