In order to bring games on both Android and iOS devices, Sony Corporation decided to form a new company named ForwardWorks that will focus on making games for smart devices.

The Japanese tech giant did not reveal any specific games but ForwardWorks will control PlayStation franchises and characters. The current plan is to release games for players in Japan and other Asian countries. Sony is seeking to lure back users who are turning to smartphones to play games, especially in Asia where mobile games and puzzle apps have become an important driver of industry growth.

The company will be formally created on April 1. Atsushi Morita, SCE’s head in Japan and Asia, will lead ForwardWorks. Other directors of the organization include Andrew House, who is Group CEO of Sony Computer Entertainment. The company will be based in Tokyo and will get $89,000 (10 million yen) in capital. ForwardWorks will have access to all of Sony’s intellectual property related to gaming and the PlayStation brand.

It appears that ForwardWorks is going to be responsible for the development, sales and operation of software on these platforms. The company will deploy new services towards the ever-expanding smart device market.

“The mobile market has grown in size to rival that for traditional game machines. We are looking to create an opportunity for more users to easily try fully-fledged game titles that emphasize playability,” said Masaki Tsukakoshi, a spokesman at Sony’s games unit.

Sony follows rival Nintendo in trying to tap the mobile gaming market. Nintendo announced its first mobile app Miitomo and racked up a million users in three days. Nintendo, which has been fiercely protective over its IP like Mario and Zelda, famously held out on making Nintendo games for non-Nintendo mobile devices for years.
