Backward compatibility, launched in Novermber 2015, is a software update that allows the latest Xbox One console to run older games, even from other platforms.

Aside from supporting older games, Microsoft is also working to redesign the interface of the Xbox console in order to closely resemble the user interface of Windows 10. This is part of the company's plan to make Windows 10 a universal platform that covers all of its supported platforms.

Among the long list of games that have already found their way into the backwards compatibility list are "Mass Effect," "Gears of War," "Fallout 3," "Assassin's Creed II," and "Borderlands."

Microsoft claims that as of March 1, Xbox One gamers have collectively played more than 30 million hours of older games through the feature.

Backward compatibility is free to use for any Xbox One owners and it works with almost every format old games are in.

For games that are on a disc, it can be downloaded directly to the console's hard drive. Other Xbox One features such as screenshots, Game DVR, multiplayer mode and Windows 10 streaming are also applicable with older supported games.

Gamers who do not have a game disc or digital copy of old games that they want to play in their Xbox One console need not to worry as Microsoft recently rolled out a feature that allow gamers to purchase Xbox 360 games and port it to their Xbox One consoles, according to PC Mag.
