South Korean technology giant Samsung Electronics has unveiled the Gear S, its latest in a growing catalogue of smartwatches that can receive and make phone calls without the need of a paired device.

Apple is gearing-up to unveil its iPhone 6 and something "more" on Sept. 9, which could mean its version of the smartwatch. Samsung has upped the ante by introducing its brand new smartwatch in spite of just launching a wearable device in July, according to the Apple Insider.

The Gear S appears more like a gadget from "Star Trek," according to the Daily Tech.

The new Samsung smartwatch sports a 2-inch AMOLED screen with a 360 x 480 pixel resolution; 512 megabytes of RAM; a 1 GHz dual-core processor; 4.1 Bluetooth; GPS/Glonass support and 802.11n Wi-Fi.

The Gear S also has a subscriber identity module slot able to connect to 2G or 3G cellular networks, making it capable of making and receiving phone calls.

It also has an international protection marking, also known as IP code and an ingress protection marking of 67. The rating shows the device is completely resistant to dust and could be submerged to a depth of one meter for 30 minutes.

Although being a step forward from its predecessors, the Gear S' battery has been downgraded to only 300 mAh, which is even less than the capacity of the Galaxy Watch R's 410 mAh.

The Gear S, however, will run on Tizen, the operating system Samsung is currently developing.

Tizen requires relatively less power to be operational. Samsung said the Gear S will last at least two days with "typical use," even though it has a cellular radio and Wi-Fi onboard.

The Gear S will hit shelves worldwide in October.
