Second, the app needs to be categorized "according to the app function and purpose."

Lastly, the app's icon must not be too similar to other apps. In short, plagiarizing icons will not be tolerated.

The new policies are now being applied to both new app submissions and those already on the store, said Todd Brix, Windows Apps and Store Team general manager.

Some of the fake apps include VLC and iTunes apps that cost the user money don't deliver the quality service needed. Whatever the cost of the app, however, Microsoft receives a cut from it.

It's been more than two years since the release of Windows 8 and this has been a problem that's getting worse. If Microsoft's trying to offer a safe app store to Windows users, they've failed.

Other fake versions apps include Firefox, Pandora, WeChat, IMDB, Candy Crush Saga, Clash of Clans, Spotify, Picasa, Google Hangouts and uTorrent.

Microsoft claims that most of the app developers already in Windows Store have agreed to comply with the new rules.

The 1,500 fake apps removed from the store were the ones that didn't comply with the new policies.

Microsoft also said it will refund the cost of an app downloaded due to a misleading title or description.
