Facebook on Tuesday launched the Facebook Profile Expansion Kit. The new feature will allow third-party developers to publish videos, recorded using their apps, as profile pictures on the social networking site.

The new Facebook feature was announced at the company's annual developer conference called F8. With this new set of tools, videos that are recorded using third-party services can now be used as a profile picture.

Facebook did not provide additional information about the new service. However, reports indicate that the company has a handful of partners that are already busy working on the new service. According to Engadget, these partners are Cinemagraph Pro, Instagram, MSQRD, Boomerang by Instagram, BeautyPlus, lollicam and Vine.

Developers will also receive attribution on their respective News Feed every time a video from their service is posted as a profile picture.

The mobile video market is slowly turning into a massive platform on its own and several tech companies are trying to get a piece of the action. Facebook chief product officer Chris Cox said during the conference that within the next few years, around 70 percent of all mobile internet activity will be attributed to video. As the biggest social networking platform, Facebook's move to capitalize on video did not entirely surprise the tech community since the company is well-known for offering its massive user base several outlets to express themselves.

Back in September 2015, Facebook released an update that allows users to use short looping videos are their profile pictures. Many tech analysts agree that by expanding its support of the video platform, Facebook is turning its profile picture feature into a more engaging art.

According to Tech Crunch, Facebook's latest update will be crucial in its success especially against services that focus on videos. With Facebook Profile Expression Kit, Facebook is making its platform more appealing to users who are more inclined to use videos on social media.
