Bundesliga giants Borussia Dortmund are trying to bring back World Cup-winning midfielder Mario Götze to their side this summer as the Germany international has "struggled to establish himself in Bavaria", recent reports say.

The Independent reported that the Borussians' chief executive, Hans-Joachim Watzke, "has publicly acknowledged that the club are open to re-signing Mario Götze", who is currently suited up for German top flight champions Bayern Munich.

"If Mario Götze comes on the market... we would discuss it," said Watzke. "He has been through all the youth teams with us. He is held in the greatest esteem."

However, Watzke admitted that for the plan to push through, the "views of (the team's) supporters would be taken into account".

"The thing is, we have to take our fans seriously. Especially those who are always there, their view is critical," he said.

The 23-year-old midfielder, who was best known for scoring the winning goal of the 2014 FIFA World Cup final in Brazil, was acquired by the Bavarians in the summer of 2013 after spending all of his senior career years with BVB since 2009. He is also a direct product of Dortmund's youth academy from 2001 up to his promotion to the first team eight years later.

Götze has been a disappointment in three seasons with Der FCB, though, scoring only 34 goals in 112 appearances for Bayern. This season, he has one goal in just 12 games in the domestic competitions, something that is not expected of someone with his caliber.

Speculations abound that English Premier League club Liverpool FC is also interested in acquiring the 5-foot-9 Memmingen, Germany native as the Reds are now coached by his former Dortmund boss, Jürgen Klopp.

Caught Offside noted that "a return to Dortmund could be a possibility rather than a reunion with Jürgen Klopp at Liverpool", which means that the German bench tactician will have to find another target that will suffice his plans for Götze.
