Days after receiving the pink slip from the Memphis Grizzlies' front office, the team's former head coach Dave Joerger has found a new home to use his skills.

Joerger, 42, has been hired as the new head coach of the Sacramento Kings, who have been battling a decade-long postseason drought. He becomes the ninth head coach since the Vivek Ranadive-owned club made it to the playoffs in 2006 under Rick Adelman. Joerger will be replacing the recently dismissed George Karl.

"He is a strong and passionate leader with a proven track record of producing results," Sacramento Kings' general manager Vlade Divac said. "Dave shares our focus on creating a long-term culture of winning and I look forward to a bright future ahead for the Kings with his leadership on the court."

Joerger, who is a 2007 NBA D-League champion coach, became part of the Grizzlies in the 2007-08 season as an assistant coach. He was promoted and replaced head coach Lionel Hollins after the 2013 Western Conference finals, where the Grizzlies failed to accomplish the task of reaching the NBA Finals.

Joerger is a five-time minor-league champion coach and was named Western Conference Coach of the Month for January in his first year as Memphis head coach.

In his three seasons with the Grizzlies, he compiled a 147-99 overall win-loss record with 9-13 in the postseason. The Grizzlies finish seventh in the Western Conference with a 42-40 win-loss record.

Joerger will reportedly get a three-year deal having a value of US$4 million per season, a person with knowledge of the agreement told The Associated Press. The agreement includes a team option for the fourth season. The person spoke to the AP on condition of anonymity because the team has not officially revealed the terms of the deal.
