Piers Morgan Confirms Exit from CNN, Tweets "Huge Respect" for Network

Piers Morgan took to social media and tweeted last Sept. 2 that he is confirming his exit from CNN.

The British journalist explained why he will no longer be appearing on the cable news network. In particular, Morgan declined CNN's offer for his contract's renewal.

"BREAKING NEWS: I am no longer a @CNN employee," the former host of "Piers Morgan Tonight" had written this Tuesday.

Having over four million followers on Twitter, the 49-year-old anchor clarified that big boss Jeff Zucker had offered him a "new 2-year deal" for hosting duties that will involve 40 interview "specials."

"But after considerable thought, I decided not to accept it - and to try pastures new," Morgan added.

The anchor's tweets may have implied that he was not keen in taking the offer and continuing his work with the network, although Morgan did emphasize the he has "huge respect" for CNN, including Zucker himself.

"Great company, great network," he stated.

Morgan first joined CNN's nighttime lineup in 2010; back then, he had already become a judge for "America's Got Talent" and its British version, and have worked on a couple of U.K. tabloids.

As a replacement for Larry King due to the 80-year-old anchor's retirement, Morgan's take on talk shows with his own "Piers Morgan Tonight" raked in criticisms from both his audiences and peers. The British anchor's show, which mainly touches issues of the American society, was also a weak performer in terms of ratings, lagging behind FOX News and MSNBC.

In February, CNN decided to cancel "Piers Morgan Tonight" due to its continually low ratings.

"If I'm to be remembered for anything CNN, I'd like it to be this" Morgan wrote on his Twitter page, with a link to a YouTube video of his unforgettable discussion with American radio host and documentary filmmaker Alex Jones. In the footage, Jones puts forward a petition for Morgan to be sent back to England.

"I wouldn't crack the champagne open too quickly though," Morgan further wrote. "@NRA - I haven't finished with you lot yet."
