U.S. Open Doubles: Martina Hingis, Flavia Pennetta Returns to Finals

Martina Hingis and her partner Flavia Pennetta returned to the U.S. Open women's doubles finals after defeating third seeds Cara Black and Sania Mirza on Thursday.

The Swiss and Italian pair needed only an hour and 10 minutes to catapult their way to their very first Grand Slam final since teaming up last year.

Hingis and Pennetta maximized their first serves and delivered four of five break points to finish the match in two straight sets, 6-2, 6-4.

"I think we beat some really great teams on the way to get there," Hingis said. "We proved it again today. They were No. 3 seed."

"I think we played really well," Pennetta said. "We really feel comfortable on the court. In the important moments or when we are down, we always come out with some different things."

The team will next face Ekaterina Makarova and Elena Vesnina who disposed the duo of Kimiko Date-Krumm-Barbora Zahlavova-Strycova also in straight sets 7-5 6-3.

Makarova and Vesnina are the first team that Hingis and Pennetta defeated since partnering up this year.

The 2013 French Open doubles winners Makarova and Vesnina had the opportunity to break service 15 times that proved to put more pressure on the Japanese-Czech team.

The fourth seeded Russians have entered their very first finals of the tournament, with Makarova reaching her first semi-finals in the singles competition.

The 17th seeded Makarova is set to face World No. 1 Serena Williams Friday.

Williams defeated Pennetta in the quarters while Makarova ousted Victoria Azarenka to reach the semis.

On the men's doubles side, the Bryan brothers, Mike and Bob are back in the finals after outgunning fellow Americans Scott Lipsky and Rajeev Ram 6-4 4-6 6-3.

The top seeded twin brothers last won the tournament in 2012 and were semi-finalists last year.

The 15-time Grand Slam champions will meet the tandem of Marcel Granollers and Marc Lopez of Spain.
