Massive flooding brought about by a week of nonstop rain in several areas of Jammu and Kashmir in India has killed 65 people, according to the latest reports on Thursday.

At least 50 people aboard a bus, which was reportedly travelling to attend a wedding in the area, have been washed away by immense flooding after all major rivers in the state flowed above the danger flood mark.

Authorities reported on Thursday that the Rajouri-bound bus slipped off the road after encountering a strong current of flood water. The vehicle was then washed away along the Lam area near the frontier of the district.

According to reports, only three of the wedding guests travelling in the bus have survived. Authorities are yet to locate the remains of other passengers of the bus that fell into a teeming river in the Nowshehra belt of the Pir Panchal region.

The region has been suffering from a massive surge since Wednesday afternoon.

Meanwhile, over 250 areas have been submerged including Awantipore, Anantnag, Bejbehara, and parts of Srinagar as the main river is already seven feet above the danger mark.

Thousands of residents in the affected areas have evacuated their homes via boats that rode the strong streams of flood.

According to Finance Minister Abdul Rahim Rather, six people were reported dead during the flood in three districts of Kashmir while seven more were found in Jammu.

In Surankot, Mendhar, and Poonch, thousands of residents are stranded with no way of sending for and receiving help.

While the water level continues to rise by the hour, residents of affected areas complain about administrative indifference.

"Our colony has been under water since 2am Thursday but no help arrived till morning. Only two boats, with a capacity of four, were made available by the administration, even though hundreds of people are stranded," Srinagar resident Mushtaq Ali stated.

The Indian government has tasked the Air Force to prepare for a rescue operation plan.
