Honolulu Residents Evacuate As Volcanic Lava Inches Closer

Liquid lava is streaming from a highly active volcano in the city Pahoa, Hawaii. The Hawaiian Observatory issues warnings to rural areas that are in the path of the smoldering magma on Hawaii' Big Island. Observatory scientists state that at the rate the flow is moving, there is not much time until it will be reaching the residences.

So far, the lava has reached over 8 miles from the area of which the lava is flowing from. Experts say that within a matter of a few days the lava can reach the town, and essentially reduce it to molten rubbish.

The 'June 27th' flow of Lava is named after the date in which the newly spotted volcanic vents began spewing molten rock down onto the island.

Lava from the June 27th flow has been seeping out of a newly found vent on the northeast flank of the volcano. The molten lava has been surging underground, filling up developed cracks in the earth, and then seeping out above ground further down the length of the island.

Though Hawaii County Civil Defense has not yet issued an official evacuation for the residents in the particular area, some are not waiting around for the word to do so.

After seeing how close the lava has come to the city with no sign of stopping, many of the residents are now moving belongings out of the area or path of the lava flow. Some of these belongings include livestock, such as cows, pigs, and horses.

The lava flow is currently at a "creeping" rate. The June 27th flow is not bursting or rapidly flowing through the island, however, if the lava flow continues to flow it could be equally devastating to the local residents, animals, homes, and agriculture.

Experts say, at this point in time, it is impossible to speculate whether the flow will cease, switch speeds or direction, or hit homes. It is also difficult to determine whether or not the flow will completely stop or merely start flowing from another vent in the volcano's structure.

One thing is for sure; there is a definite continuous slow lava flow that is potentially dangerous.

Yet with that being said, officials are saying that the flow is isolated to one particular area and most likely, would not interfere with any vacation plans one may have.
