Marvel is planning to cast Brie Larson to play the titular role of "Captain Marvel," the first female-led standalone film from the company. While no specific details have been revealed about the negotiations, there are reports that Larson is Marvel's top choice for the character. The movie is slated to be released in 2019.

According to Variety, Marvel apparently plans to introduce the character in one of its forthcoming films before the actual "Captain Marvel" premieres. Meg LeFauve (Inside Out) and Nicole Perlman (Guardians of the Galaxy) are reportedly working on the screenplay for the upcoming movie, with Kevin Feige as producer.
"Captain Marvel" follows Carol Danvers, an Air Force pilot, who becomes a superhero with powers of strength, energy protection and flight after her DNA gets mixed up with an alien during an accident. The character debuted in 1968 as an ally to space alien Mar-Vell.
In May, the company said it will release more details about the film.
"We'll be announcing a filmmaker in the next month or two, and probably some cast members later in the summer, at the end of the summer," said Marvel Studios president Kevin Feige.
Aside from Larson, who bagged the Oscar's Best Actress award for "Room," other A-list actresses such as Emily Blunt and Olivia Wilde have also been picked as contenders for the role of "Captain Marvel," according to Deadline.
"Captain Marvel" is slated to debut on March 8, 2019.
