The Samsung Galaxy S7 is a powerful and good-looking smartphone. However, a number of smartphone users complained that the device lacks durability and ruggedness which many outdoorsy people demand. In order to cater to this specific niche of users, Samsung recently announced the Galaxy S7 Active, a bigger, durable, stronger version of its flagship Galaxy smartphone.

The new Galaxy S7 Active marks the fourth consecutive year that Samsung made a rugged version of its flagship Galaxy smartphone. It is true that the Active brand brings in durability and ruggedness to the smartphone, however what it provides in durability, it lacks in aesthetic appeal.

The Galaxy S7 Active, just like its predecessors, sports and almost black brick-like design. Brick-like because of the fact that it is built for durability and is particularly intended for users who spend a lot of their time outdoors.

One of the standout selling points of the Galaxy S7 Active is that the phone is waterproof, a feature missed by the standard Galaxy S7. However, many tech analysts are still skeptical whether this feature is enticing enough to lure consumers to buy the Active model.

The S7 Active, with its durable build, looks taller and wider compared to the regular S7 model despite the fact that the screen size remains unchanged.

In comparison to the S6 Active, the new Active model ditches the visible screws. Samsung has also added a new back casing that improves the grip of the device in the hands. Additionally, the metal sides and soft-touch bumpers located on the corner are now polished, making it easier to hold the smartphone when taking photos.

Since the new S7 Active sports completely different dimensions than the standard S7 model, Samsung does not promise that it will be compatible with the current Gear VR headset. Many tech analysts are speculating that this one trade-off might sway consumers away from the S7 Active, especially with the current boom of the virtual reality platform.

The Samsung S7 Active is available via AT&T on June 10. A 30-month contract for the smartphone will cost $26.50 monthly, while a 24-month contract will cost $33.13 monthly.
