Since the start of the year, there have been rumors that tech giant Google is working with HTC to develop a new Nexus smartphone. However, it has now been confirmed that that Google is instead teaming up with Huawei again to create this year's Nexus device.

Huawei is the same manufacturer that Google trusted to develop and manufacture the Nexus 6P.

In an interview with Gear Burn, Huawei general manager of consumer business in South Africa, Charlene Munilall said, "We're doing the Nexus again this year, by the way."

Munilall made the statement following the launch of three Huawei smartphones: the P9, P9 Plus, and P9 Lite in South Africa. Both Huawei and Google are yet to confirm whether Munilall's statement has any merit.

Munilall's statement not only surprised the tech world, but also created a windmill of speculations. The Nexus 6P is widely regarded as the best Nexus device produced till date, and with this almost universal acclaim, Google is sure to join hands with Huawei once again in order to keep the standards high for its future flagship devices.

The Nexus 6P, released in the fourth quarter of 2015, was well received by both tech analysts and tech fans. It was a breakout success considering that it was the first time Google and Huawei had collaborated on a project.

Prior to Munilall's recent statement, a handful of leaks have already surfaced about the upcoming Nexus device. A benchmark result was posted on Geekbench and although it was labeled as "Google Nexus 6P," the specs were completely different from that of the actual Huawei Nexus 6P device, which led many analysts to believe that it might be an early prototype of the new Nexus device.

The Geekbench results also revealed that the device is powered by Qualcomm's Snapdragon 820 processor, supported by 4 GB of RAM.
