Miley Cyrus Reaches Out to Homeless Fans

Miley Cyrus has always been a bold performer, but her acceptance speech at the VMAs this past Sunday met the 21-year-old singer with an even bigger fan base--if that is even possible at this point. Unlike last year's VMAs when Cyrus decided to put on a risqué performance, Cyrus took this year's event to raise awareness about homelessness throughout the country.

On her Instagram page, Cyrus posted a photo with a new, unrecognizable "date" for the VMAs. The two were seen in promotional pictures and on the Red Carpet.

Fans later found out the true identity behind Cyrus's mystery date when she called him up as a part of her acceptance speech.

Instead of discussing her recent win for Video of the Year, Cyrus turned the attention over to her date--a young homeless man named Jesse, who has been residing in Los Angeles.

With courage, Jesse addressed the crowd by saying, "Thank you all--my name is Jesse, and I am accepting this award on behalf of the 1.6 million homeless youth."

Jesse continued his address by reading off notes he had brought along with him.

"I've survived in shelters all over...Though I may have been invisible to you in the streets, I have the same dreams as many of you."

Along with Cyrus's tears, Jesse's words were met with a strong reaction on Cyrus's official Facebook fan page. Many fans have since been posting their own experiences and struggles with homelessness and feel supported by Cyrus's efforts.

But Cyrus is not at all done with raising awareness. She has big plans to fundraise for My Friend's Place, a homeless shelter for youths based in Hollywood.

"I'm just getting started," Cyrus said in a public announcement two weeks ago via E! News. "And I want to make sure my fans are part of helping me to give back and make an impact on this issue-we all have the power to make change happen. This is about helping youth, people just like you and me have the opportunity to find their inner power and potential, no matter what their circumstances."

To help raise fund for My Friend's Place, Cyrus has stated in her Prizeo campaign that every donation given will enter a fan into a raffle to win tickets for her upcoming Rio de Janeiro concert at the end of September.

As of now, there are two weeks left to donate to the cause.
