Nehwal, who currently ranked world No. 8, victoriously navigated her way to the finals of the Sydney-based US$750,000 World Superseries badminton tournament after easily beating the fourth-seeded and newly promoted world No. 2 Wang Yihan of China 21-8, 21-12. The Indian badminton star wrapped up the match in just 31 minutes.

"I am very happy. I have been wanting a result like this. I have been getting to quarter-finals and semi-finals but not to the final. It has been very frustrating - sometimes having a mental block; not performing how I wanted to against the top players," Nehwal said.

The 26-year-old native of Hisar, Haryana will now have the chance to take home her second Australian Open crown that she won two years ago. The Olympic-bound shuttler will also be attempting to win her first title of the season. Nehwal last won a title in 2015 at the India Open.

While in the other women's singles semifinal match, Sun Yu scored a big upset against her fellow Chinese Li Xuerui, who is the present third-highest ranking badminton player in the world. The 22-year-old world No. 12 claimed the straight set 21-18, 21-19 victory in just 46 minutes.

It was the second time that Sun had ever beaten the 2012 Olympic champion in their nine official meetings. The native of Dalian, Liaoning will be gunning for her maiden Australian Open title.

"I hope I can win for China. I have overcome the disappointment of losing in Singapore and I'm in better spirits. I had a tough match today but I will be ready for tomorrow," said Sun.

In their head-to-head matchup, Nehwal enjoys a 5-1 advantage over Sun.
