Five-straight Chinese Super League champions Guangzhou Evergrande Taobao FC nipped German Bundesliga club FC Schalke 04 on penalties, 0-0 (5-4), during their preseason friendly encounter at the Century Lotus Stadium in Foshan, Guangdong on Thursday.

The game followed Schalke's 6-1 drubbing of Evergrande's cross-city rival CSL squad Guangzhou R&F FC on Tuesday at the Yuexiushan Stadium.

Guangzhou Evergrande managed to fend off the aggressive attacks of the Germans during the whole match to hold Die Knappen to a goalless draw after 90 minutes of regulation play. The game was then sent to a penalty shootout to decide the winner of the exhibition match.

After the first four players from Schalke each found the mark from the penalty spot, winger Sidney Sam then missed the fifth spot kick for new head coach Markus Weinzierl's side while all five of the Southern China Tigers players successfully made theirs to come away with the victory, the Bundesliga official website reported.

It was a dominating performance for the visitors, though, as they had ball possession 75 percent of the time against World Cup-winning manager Luiz Felipe Scolari's deep-lying squad throughout the contest, as per Soccerway.

Schalke had their chances in the first half when midfielder Johannes Geis almost found the back of Guangzhou keeper Zeng Cheng's net via a free kick at the 24th minute. Dutch forward and vice-captain Klaas-Jan Huntelaar and Cameroonian striker Eric Maxim Choupo-Moting both missed their chances right before the halftime interval as well.

In the second half, veteran wing back Dennis Aogo hit Evergrande's post with a header at the 72nd minute, which was the closest that the visitors could have broken the deadlock.

The game was the conclusion of Die Königsblauen's two-game visit in China's Guangdong province which also saw them playing some short exhibition with local fans headed by 20-year-old midfielder Max Meyer.

Geis accompanied Meyer in the fan games while defender Naldo, striker Franco Di Santo, and goalkeeper Ralf Fährmann graced an Adidas event elsewhere in the said province.
