British Prime Minister David Cameron has asked the Scots not to vote for independence in Scotland's independence referendum next week, reports said on Tuesday.

UK leaders decided to skip the weekly Prime Minister's Questions in parliament after the latest opinion poll showed Scotland's falling support to remain in the UK union.

Based on the latest TNS poll, the number of people who voted "no" to independence fell to 39 percent from 45 percent a month ago, while the "yes" votes was at 38 percent.

Cameron along with other main UK party leaders Nick Clegg and Ed Miliband, head to Edinburgh, Scotland on Wednesday to campaign against independence on September 18.

The prime minister promised to do all he could to hold the United Kingdom together, while UK leaders emphasized that keeping the union together was now their priority, reports said.

Cameron said they want to listen and talk to voters with regard to the huge choice they will face on the 18th.

According to reports, Cameron confirmed that UK leaders are taking steps to make sure that Scotland knows that they can have both -- the power to govern themselves, while being inside the United Kingdom.

Cameron told the BBC News that the decision is up to the Scottish people.

"I want them to know that the rest of the United Kingdom want them to stay," Cameron said.

The move of British leaders to Scotland made clear that there is a possibility of breakup of the United Kingdom.

Alex Salmond, Scotland's First Minister, said in a statement that the leaders' campaign to keep the Union was now in "absolute panic."

Responding to news of Cameron’s last-minute trip north, Salmond claimed that the campaign for the union is in "disarray" and “they are making this farce up as they go along".

He added that the Cameron, Clegg and Miliband are the most distruted politicians to come from Westminster and that their collective presence in Scotland will only boost calls for Scottish independence.
