Six people drowned tragically in Dunhuang City, Gansu Province on Sunday, July 17. Five of the six people are office colleagues, and four of them jumped into a river without fearing for their lives after their office co-worker initially jumped.

The person who jumped first is said to have been suffering from depression and warned the rest of the group about wanting to commit suicide before finally jumping. The sixth person, a vendor, reportedly jumped into the river in an attempt to save the other five people, but to no avail.

China News reports that the incident, which took place at around 6:45 p.m.on the tragic day, started as fun for the five people employed by a local company. Eventually, a lady with the last name Ma started giving out hints about wanting to end her miserable life and leapt into the river.

The other four colleagues successfully saved her after her first suicide attempt. The second attempt proved to be fatal for Ma and her friends who were aged between 18 and 26 years old. A food seller, who saw the entire incident and tried to help, was also killed. The river is said to be deep and had strong currents when the incident happened.

Statistics shows that only a few Chinese people are good swimmers. In 2014, a woman from Chongqing died after jumping into the Yangtze River to save her drowning boyfriend. The boyfriend is said to have jumped into the river to save his drowning ex-girlfriend.
