Universal Pictures and Legendary have released the first trailer for the highly anticipated Chinese-American co-production, "The Great Wall," which stars Matt Damon in the lead role.

The 3D English-language film, directed by Zhang Yimou of "Hero" and "House of Flying Daggers" fame, is set in ancient China and follows the story of a captive European mercenary (Damon) who teams up with Chinese warriors to fight an army of mysterious atop the famous titular landmark, according to The Shanghaiist.

The film's first trailer shows breathtaking views of the Great Wall and CGI-heavt shots of Damon and his Chinese comrades at war with the monsters as we find out the "real" reason behind the construction of one of the world's greatest wonders.

The film was made with a production budget of $135 million, making it the most expensive film in China ever, which is one of the reasons why the film has created so much hype and excitement in the mainland.

In addition to Damon and "Game of Thrones" actor Pedro Pascal, the film's cast includes William Dafoe, Jing Ting, Hanyu Zhang, Lu Han, Zheng Kai, Xuan Huang, Kenny Lin, Junkai Wang, Cheney Chen and Andy Lau.

The upcoming sci-fi monster flick will be Zhang's debut English-language film. The filmmaker recently said in an interview that even though the story is fictional he wanted the audiences to feel as though the events actually happened in real life and apart from the creatures, all other aspects of the film are scientifically and historically accurate.

"China doesn't have many stories about fighting against monsters. This time I will do it with Chinese cultural messages and make it outstanding and unique, and allow the whole world to experience China and its culture," Zhang added, according to China.org.

"The Great Wall" is slated to release in February 2017.
