Chinese state media has raised questions about the authenticity of the heartbreaking footage of a young boy named Omran Daqneesh, who was pulled from the rubble of a building following an airstrike in Aleppo, Syria.

The Chinese media outlet claims that the haunting images, which drew international attention to the situation in Syria, were faked as part of a Western "propaganda war," according to The Telegraph.

The video shows Omran quietly seated on an orange seat inside an ambulance staring to space before raising his hands to feel his bloodied face.

People around the globe have expressed their concern over the footage of the five-year-old, who survived the raid by Russian or Syrian regime forces on the rebel-held district of Qaterji. Omran's brother Ali succumbed to injuries suffered in the same airstrike on Saturday.

Beijing maintains close ties with Bashar al-Assad's Syrian government as well as Russia, both of which have carried out airstrikes in the war-torn area.

"Critics have suggested that [the video] is part of a propaganda war, aimed at creating a 'humanitarian' excuse for Western countries to become involved in Syria," a voice-over in the report by China Central Television (CCTV) said, according to RT.

The report, subtitled "Video suspected of being fake" further added that instead of helping the victim, the workers set up a camera and started recording the images of the young boy.

CCTV also pointed out that the Syrian Civil Defence, who took the video had "questionable independence" and drew attention to a connection between the broadcaster and the U.K.

"It may sound like a group organized by the Syrians, actually, it is led by an organization called 'Crisis Rescue', whose founder and leading official is a UK military official," the report said.
