The Philadelphia 76ers recently announced that rookie and No. 1 overall pick Ben Simmons' surgery to repair his "Jones fracture of the fifth metatarsal" injury was successful. Despite the success of the injury, the Sixers has yet to release a timetable for his return.

In a press release posted by the Sixers, Director of Performance Research and Development Dr. David T. Martin said, "Our sports performance and medical staff was debriefed by Dr. O'Malley following the procedure, and we were encouraged by the positive feedback."

According to CBS Sports, the main concern regarding Simmons' injury is the extremely high possibility of re-injuring his foot, given his 6-foot-10, 250lbs build.

In the past, big men who suffered a foot injury had a higher possibility of re-injuring it compared to their smaller counterparts. Big men like Yao Ming and Zyndrunas Ilgauskas had their careers hampered by recurring injuries in the foot.

Case in point, Kevin Durant missed the first 17 games of the 2014-2015 NBA season due to extended recovery period from a Jones fracture. Durant's injury led to complications on his ankle and foot as the season went on. In February, he submitted himself to a minor procedure and a bone graft towards the end of the season causing him to miss the final 27 games.

The Sixers is looking for two possibilities on how to deal with Simmons' injury: either to sit him out for the whole season and have him fully recover from his injuries, or have him play and take the risk of re-injuring his foot.
