Billy Jack Chatman, who was killed in his home, was recorded as having called the ambulance on August 30, even when Hoffman had told him not to tell anybody about what had happened. In the recorded call, Chatman relayed what Hoffman had told him, that he was beaten up by at least eight men. Chatman had also said that Hoffman smelled of alcohol and was clearly a victim of assault, and added that he was not sure if Hoffman were still breathing.

The next day, Hoffman woke up already in the hospital. When asked by police if he knew what happened the night before, he said he did not remember anything.

The body of Chatman, 55, and another man named Freeling Hensley, 67, were found two days after Hoffman entered Chatman's home. Darrell Lewis, 65, and Gerald Lee Smith, 65, were found on September 2nd.

For each of the murders, Hoffman, also known as "Big Don," was indicted on two counts of aggravated murder and single counts of aggravated robbery, felonious assault, and kidnapping. It also included a single charge of abuse of a corpse. He will be arraigned on Monday.

Relatives and friends of the four men said Hoffman and the victims knew one another, either as mutual friends or poker and drinking buddies, or because they lived in the same neighborhoods.
