Memo to Florida State Heisman Award winning quarterback Jameis Winston: Shouting out sexually-charged obscenities in public will get you suspended for the first half of a football game.

Winston will miss the first half of FSU's Saturday game with No. 22 ranked Clemson due to his shouting a vulgar comment relating to having sex with women while standing on top of a table at a student dining hall Tuesday. The practice of shouting the comment in public places or on live TV broadcasts has become a kind of fad recently.

Florida State interim president Garnett Stokes and Athletic Director Stan Wilcox issued a joint statement saying Winston will undergo unspecified internal discipline and not play in the first half of the Clemson game.

Coach Jimbo Fisher said Winston made a bad decision and further discipline may be forthcoming.

Winston held a Wednesday news conference to apologize to fans and teammates, adding his behavior was selfish. He urged everybody to move ahead and win the game.

Winston is no stranger to controversy. He was said to have raped a fellow student, but prosecutors controversially declined to press charges. He also owned up to stealing $32 worth of crab legs from a local market.

In this case, Winston's transgressions were reported first by Deadspin based on tweets sent out by students and witnesses to the scene at the student union on Tuesday. Shouting the sexually obscene phrase was doubly compounded by the recent spate of sexual abuse and violence issues involving NFL players in the past few months.

Saturday's contest is a key Atlantic Coast conference matchup as FSU seeks to repeat as NCAA college football champion. FSU's hopes for an unbeaten regular season campaign likely hinges on its game against Clemson and an Oct. 18 game against Notre Dame.

The Winston obscene shout-out also may be a factor in his campaign for a second Heisman Trophy that is awarded to the best player in the college game. Critics said the incident reinforced public perception of Winston as a bad guy.
