The National Security Bureau in Beijing announced that citizens of the city who will provide the government useful information about foreign spies are eligible for a reward of up to 500,000 yuan (US$72,460) starting this week.

Interested informants can call a hotline, send letters, or visit Beijing's security bureau to pass on their information. The reward, with a minimum of 10,000 yuan, will be based on the information's usefulness.

China is cracking down on foreign nationals who engage in espionage, which, according to Chinese law, includes giving financial help to organizations that are involved in activities that endanger national security, and provoke, tempt, and bribe government officials.

The informants' personal information will be kept confidential unless they express otherwise. They can also seek security authorities if they or their relatives are in danger due to the information they submitted. But if they gave false information, they will be charged with slander.
