According to the current polls, a change is indicated in the government of Victoria, which could pave the way for a potential Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) card and even a title fight in Melbourne, Australia.

Currently, the legislation does allow for any mixed martial arts (MMA) event to take place in Victoria. However, it does not authorize the use of a purpose built cage for its operations, only boxing rings.

While the fighters are allowed to participate in MMA events, there is still a ban that applies to the arena in which these bouts take place. This makes it hard for top level organizations to hold cards there, like the UFC or even Bellator.

There might be hope for MMA events to still take place though, as there is the upcoming Victoria state election that could shift the balance.

The Napthine government - under the leadership of Denis Napthine, the elected leader of the Parliamentary party - stated in an interview to MMAKanvas that if they win the elections, they would continue to uphold the ban.

However, if the elections were to take place today, they would lose considering they are behind in the polls. They are trailing the opposition (Labor) 48 percent to 52 percent on a two party preferred basis via ABC.

John Eren, the Shadow Minister for Sport and Recreatino, also spoke with MAKanvas, and said that if they won the upcoming elections on the 29th of November, they would lift the cage ban as a matter of priority.

He clarifies that he wants to lift the ban, not only to make the fights safer, but also to attract key tourism opportunities that exist with having a UFC card in Victoria, Melbourne. He is adamant that the ban must be lifted as soon as possible.

The UFC on the other hand are quite ready to pack up and put together a show that can headline in the area.
