It's the year of British boy band One Direction, after UK's biggest act snagged the top award as the Artist of the Year.

The band competed with Iggy Azalea, Beyoncé, Luke Bryan, Eminem, Imagine Dragons, John Legend, Lorde, Katy Perry and Pharrell Williams up for the night's highest honor.

The band also won two other awards-Favorite Pop/Rock Duo or Group and Pop/Rock Album for "Midnight Memories."

Band members were very elated to have won the honors.

"It's amazing because we worked so hard on these last two albums," band member Liam Payne said.

The five-member band performed their latest "Night Changes" in the event made more amazing by its night-time forest decor.

Meanwhile, American pop singer Katy Perry also grabbed three awards, although she was missing because she's in Australia for her concert tour.

Another boy band, the Australian newcomers 5 Seconds of Summer won, grabbed the New Artist of the Year award.

Australian rapper Iggy Azalea was honored with the Favorite Rap/Hip Hop album for "The New Classic" and Favorite Rap/Hip Hop Artist, beating the likes of Eminem and Drake.

But what made the night even more spectacular was the performances of the most popular female singers.

Taylor Swift's opening performance saw her as a mad woman giving a poisonous apple to a boy while holding a rose while singing her latest hit single, "Blank Space."

Meanwhile, Jennifer Lopez and Iggy Azalea almost brought down the house with their show-stopping rendition of "Booty."

The American Music Awards (AMAs) is an annual American music awards show. Created by Dick Clark in 1973, it is ABC network's version of the Grammy Awards, when the latter's contract with the station expired. Compared to the Grammys, where awards are based on the votes by members of the Recording Academy, the AMAs, meanwhile, are determined by the voting public and music buyers.
