The two singers will take the place of the group's vocalist, Bono, who is still recuperating following his cycling accident that necessitated emergency surgery.

The two crooners will collaborate with the Irish band, as well as with Adam Clayton, The Edge and Larry Mullen Jr., in performing U2 hits.

Rapper Kanye West and country singer Carrie Underwood is also slated to appear on the concert in commemoration of the World AIDS Day.

"This year is a World Aids Day like no other," Bono said in a statement posted on the group's website.

"Today, 13 million people have access to life-saving treatment, up from 300,000 just over 10 years ago. Americans don't know the role they've played in this fight. Tonight's event is to inform them and thank them," the 54-year-old rocker continued.

According to a statement released on Monday, the development of the human immunodeficiency virus (HIV), which is the culprit behind AIDS, has been found to have slowed down. This is seen a factor that could serve as a turning point in the worldwide malady that started to spread over 30 years ago.

Data obtained from the United Nations revealed that 35 million people are HIV-infected as of 2013. Of there, 2.1 million people were newly infected. Around 1.5 million people died of AIDS last year.

Bono, hailed for his humanitarian efforts, has been lobbying for many causes, ranging from debt relief, poverty and AIDS.

Bono met a bicycle accident while trying to avoid another cyclist in New York's Central Park.

The U2 front man was then rushed to the New York-Presbyterian/Weill Cornell Medical Center's Emergency Department where he underwent "multiple X-rays and CAT scans."

Five hours of surgery was then performed, after it was found that he sustained injuries on his face, shoulder blade and arm.

His surgeon, Dr. Dean Lorich said that that Bono's "elbow was washed out and debrided, a nerve trapped in the break was moved and the bone was repaired with three metal plates and 18 screws.". Another procedure was performed to fix his fractured left pinky finger.

Bono will "require intensive and progressive therapy," although "a full recovery is expected," Lorich said in an interview with Rolling Stone.
