Idina Menzel (Finally) Recognized With Breakthrough Award At Billboard's Women in Music

2014 is definitely Idina Menzel's year and after singing on stage and screen for almost 20 years, it seems only fitting to honor the Tony award-winning performer with the Breakthrough Award At Billboard's Women in Music, Billboard reports.

"Introducing Idina Menzel...what could possibly go wrong?" Savannah Guthrie brought audience to laughter before introducing Billboard's the talented honoree at Billboard's annual Women in Music event Friday Dec. 12.

The event wasn't just merely to honor the performer but, in one way or another, pay her a tribute for the overdue award.

The surprise for the singer began when Guthrie started talking about "A BroaderWay," the summer musical theater camp that Menzel organized as a way to help kids hone their musical potentials.

"Idina loves these girls," Guthrie told the crowd.

"It turns out Idina doesn't just have the voice of an angel, she has the heart of one too."

Then, about a dozen A BroaderWay Choir appeared on stage to sing a mashup of "Defying Gravity" and "Let it Go," putting Guthrie into tears of joy.

A surprised and emotional Menzel said: "I wasn't prepared for that!"

"If you ever need to be reminded of taking risk, just spend a little time with these wonderful women who come out of this city into the country and escape from their everyday life. They're my inspiration. Thank you," she told the audience.

Menzel said that it was really unbelievable that she got the breakthrough  award, as much as she would be singing "Let It Go,"  at the tender age of... well... 43.

"Everybody at my table, they've been with me for so many years, when the phone wasn't ringing. [My team] stuck by me and believed in me....I've been around!

She then recalled what her mom told her: "'You're not really going to make it till you build a thicker skin. The universe won't give it to you until you're ready,'" she said.

" [I'm always] told a Broadway singer can't cross over....'Who are you? Who are you?' [everyone wants to know]. And the answer is....I don't know! I know I'm a cool chick, hard worker, good mom, pretty talented singer. It has taken me this long to realize that if you're easily able to categorize yourself you're probably [shaping into] someone else's opinion of you," she continued.

Menzel won the Tony Award for Best Leading Actress in a Musical in 2005 for her role as Elphaba in the Broadway musical Wicked. Her rendition of "Let It Go" reached No. 5 on the Billboard Hot 100 chart. Menzel is so far the only competitive Tony Award winner to reach the top 10 in Billboard, with her album, Holiday Wishes (2014) landing number 10 on the Billboard 200 albums chart.
