Police officials said that the 23-year-old Polanco was arrested on charges of attempted murder and robbery. The second man was also arrested and identified as 28-year-old Joshua Kemp. He was charged only with robbery. The two were given their attorneys but the names of their defendants were not immediately available to the public.

Reports suggest that the police officers who responded to the robbery spotted Kemp outside  the establishment while Polanco was inside. The officers reportedly got out of the car then approached Kemp. Polanco fired one round from the window of the establishment and hit one officer. He then ran outside and fired around two more shots, wounding the other officer.

Polanco then used a carjacked white Camaro but crashed a few blocks away. He started to travel on foot. While Kem was seeking treatment at a hospital, the staff at the hospice called the police.

Following the aftermath of the robbery and the shooting, a news conference was held by the New York Police Department (NYPD) officials where they praised five officers who chose to respond to the robbery report even if they were no longer on duty.

Chief of Department James O'Neill said in a statement: "I commend them for their courage. They were going home ... and they ended up getting into a fierce firefight."

The two officials in plain clothes, who were shot and wounded were actually no longer in their uniforms as they were already off duty. and homeward bound. The officers were identified as Andrew Dossi and Aliro Pellerano. They were immediately taken to the hospital and are already in stable condition as of today.

The shooting was just two weeks after two officers in Brooklyn were shot dead while they were sitting in their patrol car.
