Jury Convicts Two Former Vanderbilt Football Players of Rape

Vanderbilt Case

Brandon Vandenburg and Corey Batey have already been charged with rape.

A Jury has convicted two former football players from Vanderbilt on Tuesday for raping a former female student after rejecting their claim that they were too drunk to know what was going on.

The two men identified as Brandon Vandenburg and Cory Batey noted that binge drinking and promiscuous sex should be blamed for their acts but all these were dismissed by the jury. The jury has deliberated for three hours on the case before announcing that the two former players will be convicted on charges of aggravated rape and aggravated sexual battery.

The victim was 21 years old at the time of the attack, in June 2013, and was a neuroscience and economics major. She was present at the trial and cried when she heard the jury's verdict. The two men face decades of imprisonment and will have their sentence carried out on March 6, 2015.

According to reports, the victim did not remember what happened that night but woke up in a dorm room. Also, images in the cellphone of Vandenburg were retrieved and these were sent to their friends when the assault happened. The woman was seen unconscious and partially naked in a dorm hallway but no one reported it to the authorities.

Vandenburg's attorney said he did not assault the victim but several testimonies attested that he passed out condoms and slapped her buttocks. He also noted that he could not have sex with the woman because he was high on cocaine. As for Batey, prosecutors said he raped the woman and even urinated on her.

The Vanderbilt case is said to be a form of a publicity that would hopefully help end sexual violence in college campuses.
