The daily arrival of dozens of wounded Ukrainian soldiers at the Central Hospital in Artemivsk City has created a chaotic, stressful and somber atmosphere.

The ambulance often arrives every few minutes, bringing bloodied soldiers from different war zones. As fellow soldiers rush to help the wounded and injured, civilian medical staff also keep up with the harried pace, reports VOA News.

A Ukrainian national guard recounts picking up a corpse and two wounded soldiers from two different areas as a result of the intensified Russian offensive. The high demand for ambulance services causes perennial shortage of properly equipped medical vehicles.

Since these vehicles are under constant threat of shelling, transport facilities often do not last, leaving always a big gap for medical and intensive care transport logistics.

Also in high demand is hospital space, which often runs out as dozens of soldiers are brought daily, said a trauma doctor. Just to indicate how busy the life of medics are, the physician who gave his first name only as Nikolai, narrates that after leaving the operating room, he amputated the lower right leg of a soldier whose vehicle drove onto an anti-personnel mine while evacuating other wounded troopers.

Last week, Nikolai handled 40 cases every day, most of them deep wounds and torn limbs.

On an average day, 13 to 15 soldiers die in the hospital which has treated over 5,000 fighters since the Moscow-backed separatist rebels started their revolt in April 2014.

On Sunday, 13 soldiers died and 20 were wounded in Debaltseve.

Meanwhile, CBC reports that the escalation of fighting in Debaltseve in eastern Ukraine resulted in the evacuation of about 1,000 residents the past few days, said Prime Minister Arseniy Yatsenyuk.
