Roll-Royce is now ready to cross any terrain.

Yes, Rolls-Royce is taking big leap from its luxury saloons to an all-terrain SUV.

The company announced on Tuesday it is building a car that can cross any terrain but offers the luxury of a Rolls Royce - a historic move in its 111-year journey.

In a joint open letter, Rolls-Royce Chairman Peter Schwarzenbauer and Chief Executive Torsten Muller-Ötvos said the new Rolls-Royce will be true to its brand - one that meets customers' highly mobile and contemporary lifestyle.

"Many discerning customers have urged us to develop this new car - and we have listened," the executives wrote.

"So we have challenged our engineers and design team... to create a different and exceptional new car," they added.

The company does not call the new Rolls a Sports Utility Vehicle (SUV) but a "go anywhere vehicle".

It is expected to be high-bodied with all-aluminum architecture.

But Rolls-Royce executives said they cannot object to the term SUV being given to the new vehicle, which they say is a car and not a truck.

No further details were given to describe the new vehicle, not even pictures or renderings.  One possible name had floated though -- The Rolls-Royce Cullinan.

Rolls decision to build an all-terrain car comes as its archrival Bentley is coming up with its SUV, the Bentley Bentayga.  It is expected to hit the roads this year.

Rolls-Royce still makes three cars -- the Phantom sedan, the Ghost and the Wraith.

The company has not released any timetable for the production of the new Rolls.  Pricing has not been disclosed either.  One thing is sure though, it would be one of the world's most expensive vehicles, analysts said.
