Fifty Shades of Grey's mystique still keeps moviegoers titillated, propelling it to remain No. 1 on the box office, although its box-office receipt dropped by 70%.

The biggest flop this week, though, was the highly awaited sequel to 2010's Hot Tub Time Machine. The film was heavily marketed and promoted and yet it only grossed US$5 million on its opening weekend, landing the seventh place, far away from its predecessor who landed the third spot on its debut weekend, grossing US$15 million.

Kevin Costner's second feel good movie to premier within four weeks, McFarland USA, earned a modest US$11 million, but not bad for a budget of US$17 million. It will only take a few days until the film recoups its production expenses. The film, nevertheless, earned positive reviews

Landing on the fifth spot is the Can't Buy Me Love re-tread The DUFF (updated for the 2010's with gender reversal and gratuitous Ken Jeong casting). The film's earning, US$11 million, for its debut week already more than earned its US$9 million budget, making it a profitable, if not a box office venture.

American Sniper, which already grossed US$319 million in domestic box office, remains on the top, despite declining sales. The film managed to add US$10 million to its gross this weekend just US$17 million away before it becomes the highest grossing film for 2014.
