The jury members of a federal court have agreed to give Boston Marathon bomber Dzhokhar Tsarnaev the death penalty - the sentence will be carried out through lethal injection.

The capital punishment was handed to him after the jury convicted him of conspiring "to use a weapon of mass destruction" plus an additional 29 related charges last April.

In 2013, two homemade bombs exploded at an area close to the Boston Marathon finish line, which resulted in the death of three people and injured hundreds more. Many of the seriously injured had their limbs amputated or had undergone extensive surgeries in order to survive.

Police investigation revealed that the two brothers Tamerlan (the older one) and Dzhokhar converted two pressure cookers into lethal bombs though Tamerlan was subsequently killed after shooting it out with the police.

Defense Lawyer Judy Clarke told the jury that Tamerlan manipulated his younger brother Tsarnaev into committing the terrorist act but most of the jury members were not convinced. Before he was given the death penalty, Clarke invited relatives of Tsarnaev including his friends and teachers. The testimonies of his former friends and teachers convinced the jury members to conclude that he got along with them.  Even parents of the youngest casualty in the Boston Marathon explosion pleaded to the jury not to hand out the death penalty.

These attempts were unsuccessful for only three jurors were willing to believe the "manipulation" defense while most of them were convinced by the prosecution's portrayal of Tsarnaev as a willing participant and a dangerous terrorist.

The two brothers were also involved in the killing of an MIT campus policeman as they were avoiding the manhunt that quickly followed after the bombing.  Although Tsarnaev's side are free to file motions for appeal, it is reportedly highly unlikely that such decision will be overturned.
