Roman Catholics In America's Support For Pope Francis Declines

Pope Francis

(Photo : Getty Images) Roman Catholics in many parts of the world dubbed Pope Francis as the "People's Pope," but it seems that the American Catholics' support for him has waned.

The Pope's outspoken nature may have earned him favorable comments from other parts of the world, but not amongst the Roman Catholics of the USA.  He is set to have his first trip in USA in two months time. However, according to a poll released by Gallup, the support for Pope Francis in the U.S. has waned.

New York Post reveals the dive from 76 percent favorable comments on the Pope to a 45 percent. Apparently, when the first poll by Gallup was made last February 2014, most of the Americans expressed how hopeful they are that the Roman Catholics faith will be further strengthened by Pope Francis. Many of those who had a negative view on the Pope were reportedly conservatives.

The new poll was conducted from July 8 to 12, just three weeks after the Pope proclaimed that climate change is man-made and that this environmental phenomena is an exploitation of the poor people all over the world. The survey was conducted to more than 1,000 adults. Its margin of error is at about 4 percent.

According to NBC News, the people who participated in the poll made remarks on Pope Francis' criticism on climate change, economy and capitalism, stating that he should not have focused on those because the Roman Catholic Church still had tons of issues to resolve. There were also some who commented on Pope Francis' slowness in changing the policy of the church on the good changes they wanted.

Fox News Latino interviewed a 64-year-old man named Jack Wynn, who claimed that he is a Roman Catholic all his life. Wynn stated that the economic outlook of the Pope is quite upsetting, mainly because he is a fiscal conservative. He also mentioned that he has lost faith on how the Roman Catholic Church will handle its finances and will stop donating money to his local church in Virginia. "My opinion of the Pope is that he is a socialist and is dumping on capitalism," said Wynn during the interview.

Considering that America's population is not predominantly Roman Catholic, Gallup considers the outcome of the poll to still be favorable to the Pope.  Francis is set to be in Washington on September 22. He will go to New York and Philadelphia. He is set to meet the congress on September 24.
