Boxing News & Rumors: Latest Developments Make Chances Of Floyd Mayweather-Manny Pacquiao Rematch Go Down Further

After their substandard "Fight of the Century" last May, many boxing fans are hopeful that Floyd Mayweather Jr. (48-0, 26 KOs) and Manny Pacquiao (57-6-2, 38 KOs) will again cross paths inside the ring next year and treat them to a real fight.

However, with the latest developments within the two fighters' camps and their declared plans, the chances of a rematch between arguably the best boxers in their generation are getting more and more unlikely as the days pass.

First, Mayweather is insistent that he is fighting his last boxing match against Andre Berto (30-3, 23 KOs) on September 12th.

The New York Daily News reported that in a conference call last week, the pay-per-view king got so disturbed when asked about his retirement plans post-Berto that he sought help from his company's CEO Leonard Ellerbe and public relations officer Kelly Swanson to answer some of the media's questions for him.

The report also exposed a rumor that the pound-for-pound champion will return again next spring after retiring this year to "christen the MGM-AEG's new $375 million arena in Las Vegas" against a still unknown opponent, but probably the one that would give him the most money.

Mayweather first retired in 2007 after his fight against Ricky Hatton only to come back in 2009 to dispose off the challenge of Juan Manuel Marquez.

Meanwhile, Sports Illustrated indicated that Top Rank chief Bob Arum revealed that the Pac-Man has one more fight left in 2016 before entering Philippine politics for good as he runs for a Senate seat.

Fight fans and analysts believe that one match will be against his stablemate Terence Crawford, who Arum is reportedly trying to build up as his potential cash cow replacement once Pacquiao retires from boxing.

However, a recent report from Boxing News 24's Chris Williams noted that Arum seems to be singing a different tune as he said that Mayweather and Pacquiao may actually clash again next year, but "a lot of things would need to fall in place" for it to push through.

First, Mayweather should delay his retirement for that to happen in early 2016. Second, Manny should already be 100 percent recovered from his major shoulder injury. And third, both would have to agree again on the schedule, fight purse, and other details to make it happen.
