New York Giants defensive end Jason Pierre-Paul met with team's medical personnel Monday after staying away all offseason due to his contract situation and while recovering from a severed right index finger.

The Giants were finally able to begin deliberations about when Pierre-Paul might be able to play, according to The New York Times.

Pierre-Paul was described to be in good spirits and eager to resume playing but no timetable had been established for his return.

Giants coach Tom Coughlin did not comment on how Pierre-Paul will fit into the team's plans and if the latter could be available to play in the season opener.

The team has not been able to examine Pierre-Paul since the July 4 fireworks accident.

Pierre-Paul chose amputation on his right index finger after the accident since it would help get him back to action sooner.

It was reported last week that Pierre-Paul's rehab is "progressing very well," and that he might report prior to the start of the regular seaso, ESPN reported.

Pierre-Paul, the Giants franchise player, won't sign his $14.813 million franchise tender until he's sure he wouldn't be placed on non-football injury list and not be paid for games missed.

He wants to be guaranteed the prorated portion of his salary that reflects the number of games he is expected to play.

The veteran pass-rusher believes he could play with the hand in its current condition.

While the old Pierre-Paul can instantly upgrade the team's defense, it remains to be seen what the current version can do.The Giants designated Pierre-Paul their franchise player in March.

The young pass-rusher had been seeking a long-term contract and the accident is certainly a big blow to his plans.
