A supposedly peaceful demonstration to find justice for Michael Brown in Ferguson, Missouri turned violent on Monday, just a day after Governor Jay Nixon lifted the 12 am - 5 am curfew and deployed the National Guard to the area.

Ferguson, a majority-black town with a population of 21,000, is protesting the fatal shooting of Michael Brown, 18, by a white cop during a confrontation on August 9. Authorities in the town previously countered demonstrators with smoke canisters and tear gas, Fox News detailed.

On Monday evening, National Guard troops stood by an area near West Florissant Avenue with armored vehicles, while a growing crowd marched closer. According to the St. Louis Post-Dispatch, some protesters started hurling bottles at the police at around 10 p.m. local time.

The police ordered the crowd to clear the streets and began firing sound cannons to disperse them. One group defied the no-stopping orders and assembled near the police lines.

An armored vehicle attempted to clear the assembly by moving down the street while some pastors locked arms and helped move the demonstrators away from the area.

Police said they detained two men for disorderly conduct and refusing to disperse. During the past week, they also arrested a number of journalists, but released them later on with no charges filed.

A grand jury is set to hear evidence on Wednesday to determine if Darren Wilson, the officer involved in the fatal shooting, should be held guilty of Brown's death, according to Ed Magee, spokesperson for the county prosecutor.

On Monday, office administrator Suzanne McCune revealed an autopsy that found Brown sustained six to eight shots in the head and the chest. She added that the full findings are expected to be released in two weeks.

Brown's family hired an independent pathologist to conduct an autopsy. The procedure revealed that Brown had six gunshots plus two in the head.

Shawn Parcells, a forensic pathologist, said one bullet hit the victim's right arm. This wound may indicate that Brown had his back to the officer or was in a defensive position when he was shot, Parcells said. However, he clarified that they still have to examine other details of the investigation.

The Justice Department authorized a final autopsy on Monday, Attorney General Eric Holder said. He is scheduled to meet with officials in Ferguson this week and discuss the investigation into the case.

Meanwhile, the Ferguson-Florissant School District canceled classes for the rest of the week starting late Monday because of the unrest.
